King Charles 'couldn't watch Rocky Horror Show because of the fishnets and suspenders'

King Charles once said he couldn’t go and watch the Rocky Horror Show “because of the fishnets and suspenders”, one of the stars of the cult movie and stage show has claimed.

And the monarch was said to be unimpressed by the suggestion that he could come to see the show dressed as the character Brad – a nerd who wears a doctor’s coat and Y-front pants. The revelation comes as the stage show – which features a cross-dressing bisexual from another planet – celebrates its 50th year.

Patricia Quinn – who played Magenta on stage in 1973, and in the 1975 film adaptation – shared details of her royal encounter during a recent interview. She said that her role in the classic musical had allowed her to meet many celebrities over the years – but that one of her most memorable encounters was with Charles, who was Prince of Wales at the time.

Quinn, whose lips feature in the memorable opening scene of the Rocky Horror Picture Show movie, claimed Charles declined her invitation to come and see the show. She told the BBC Radio Ulster’s Talkback programme: “I invited him to see the show but he said he couldn’t really go because of the fishnets and suspenders.

“I suggested he come as Brad, the nerd who wears a doctor’s coat and Y-fronts. I don’t think he was impressed.”

However, one Royal at least is said – somewhat surprisingly – to be a fan of the risque Rocky Horror Show. Quinn has previously said the King’s late aunt, Princess Margaret, was – along with Mick Jagger – among the people who were “queueing down the street” to see the show when it first came out in 1973.
