Just Stop Oil's bizarre Wimbledon stunt mocked as 'most embarrassing one yet'

Two Just Stop Oil protesters invaded a Wimbledon match on Wednesday as they ran onto the grass throwing orange confetti glitter and jigsaw pieces.  Just Stop Oil said the supporters ran onto the court at around 2.10 pm and “threw environmentally-friendly orange confetti glitter and jigsaw pieces on to the courts, before being removed”.

Play has been suspended on Court 18, where Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov was playing Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro.

The latest interruption by the eco-mob has been mocked as the “most embarrassing one yet” by social media users who criticised the activists.

Commenting on the video posted by Just Stop Oil, a user said: “My god this is the most embarrassing one yet”

A spokesperson for the All England Club told express.co.uk: “Following an incident on Court 18, two individuals have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass and criminal damage and these individuals have now been removed from the Grounds.

“Play on the court was temporarily paused and, following a suspension in play due to a rain delay, play is about to resume.”

Another social media user said: “I thought you liked the environment, and then you go and start littering.”

A third user said: “I support the slow walking on streets, this one was pointless, there is a point where support changes into the opposite. And why is she imitating an airplane?”

Last month, cricketer Jonny Bristow was cheered by fans at the Ashes as he carried a protestor from the ground as they attempted to disrupt play.

A trio of protesters have been charged with aggravated trespass contrary to section 68 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.

Just Stop Oil (JSO) has already hit a number of sporting events in 2023 including the snooker World Championships in Sheffield when they caused outrage by squatting on the green baize and throwing orange powder and also at the rugby union final at Twickenham.
