'I took my nephew to the police station after his mum never came to collect him'

A man dropped his cousin’s three-year-old child off at the police station after his mum never came to pick him up and has questioned whether he was in the wrong.

The unnamed man was looking after his first cousin once removed but referred to him as his nephew. He was thrown into a moral dilemma when the child’s 36-year-old mother never came back to collect him.

The 24-year-old man eventually took the toddler to the police station but was left wondering whether his actions were appropriate.

He took to Reddit to gauge who the one in the wrong in this situation actually was.

The post read: “My cousin is mad because I dropped my three-year-old nephew, her kid, off at the police station because she never came back to get him, and wouldn’t return my calls. Am I in the wrong?”

“I have studies and a job. I was only supposed to watch him for five days, she was supposed to come get him at 10pm on the fifth day but she went to the beach.

“She never responded to my calls and texts but kept posting stories of her on Snapchat. I waited another two days but she still wouldn’t answer me.”

The man went on to explain that wasn’t able to drop the child off at his grandparent as they live over eight hours away.

He claimed he didn’t have a driver’s license or money for a taxi or plane ticket. The man felt he had no choice but to take the infant to the police station.

He continued: “My parents couldn’t watch him either, so I dropped him off with my cousin’s contact info/ location at the police station. Now she’s mad at me and asked why I didn’t put him in daycare.

“I told her he’s not my kid and I’m not paying £238 a week for him. What would you do?”

One Reddit user replied: “My mum did this to me. Dropped me off with a lady from my daycare to keep me for a few days so she could fly out of state to be with my very married dad. When she failed to pick me up and was unreachable the lady was going to turn me over to CPS.

“Somehow my grandma figured out where I was after my mum didn’t come home and my grandma threatened a lawsuit if they didn’t turn me over to her, so they finally did.”

Another said: “She sounds like the type of mum who had a kid by accident and only kept it because being pregnant got her attention/leniency.”

A third wrote: “She abandoned her child, and you responded accordingly. It’s good to have the incident documented in case she tries to make a habit of it.”
