'I feel free!' Prince Harry says 'huge weight is off my shoulders' after publishing Spare

Prince Harry has said the release of Spare has left him feeling “incredibly free” in a live interview with trauma therapist Gabor Maté. The Duke of Sussex was speaking two months on from the release of his bombshell memoir.

The 38-year-old said he “feels great” now that the tell-all book is out. He added: “I felt a huge weight off my shoulders.”

Picking up on Harry’s newfound “freedom”, the 79-year-old Maté noted: “Freedom is actually a big theme in your book. And it comes up a number of times.”

The Hungarian-Canadian reflected that fame can liberate people, but fame as a royal is the opposite.

“Some kinds of fame provide extra freedom, maybe, I suppose. But royal fame was captivity”, he said.

Harry responded: “When is someone in his family going to break free and then I have now yeah, it was a few like, it was great.

“Once the book came out, I felt I felt incredibly free. It’s a huge weight off my shoulders.

“But also the system of which I was in, I guess to some extent still and part of it doesn’t encourage the living of free living.”

Maté continued: “You’re working hard to become more aware more kind but the more you did, the more distant you became from your own family.”

In reply Harry said: “A lot of families are complicated, a lot of families are dysfunctional – but for me when I was doing therapy regularly… I felt that I learned a new language.”

The Prince said other members of his family “didn’t speak that language”.

Harry recalled telling his therapist: “This is working for me and I’m starting to go back to the point of trauma and unpack everything so I can be truly happy… but at the same time I’m feeling more and more distant from my loved ones and my family.”

Prince Harry is being interviewed by trauma expert Maté to promote his memoir, Spare. More to follow…
