How Tottenham could look with Sheikh Jassim's billions to rub salt in Man Utd wounds

After withdrawing from the bidding process for Manchester United recently, Sheikh Jassim could be tempted to still invest his funds into a Premier League outfit and buy shares in Tottenham. Daniel Levy spoke openly about how he is welcoming new investment, despite some Spurs supporters wanting him to leave the club entirely in favour of new ownership. With Sheikh Jassim’s funds, Tottenham could splash the cash on rebuilding their squad and becoming true title contenders. Express Sport takes a look at how their new XI could look with the Qatari billions funding their transfer business…

Goalkeeper: Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Although Guglielmo Vicario has made a sensational start to life at Spurs, the Italian could benefit from working with a more experienced goalkeeper and learning from their experience. Ter Stegen was heavily linked with a move to Spurs previously and it would be no surprise if he remains in their thoughts if Sheikh Jassim demands short-term success upon his arrival in north London – especially as Barcelona are still in a weak financial position and would be willing to entertain the majority of transfer bids.

Defence: Jeremie Frimpong, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie

Despite having the funds available to do so, Tottenham do not need to attempt to completely rebuild their defence. Instead, signing Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen would add further quality in right-back and enable fringe stars, such as Emerson Royal and Ivan Perisic, to finally be offloaded. Signing another top-tier centre-back would also be key to avoiding injuries from derailing Spurs’ campaign and Sporting star Ousmane Diomande, 19, could be an option that is explored.

Midfield: Martin Zubimendi, James Maddison, Yves Bissouma

Sheikh Jassim could provide Ange Postecoglou with the transfer funds to dip into the transfer market and purchase a defensive-minded midfielder of his liking to glue his midfield three together. It has proven difficult for any top club to lure Martin Zubimendi away from Real Sociedad, but the prospect of being part of a well-backed, lucrative project could prove persuasive if Spurs table a significant offer for his services.

With Rodrigo Bentancur returning from injury and Pape Matar Sarr impressing so far this season, Tottenham do not lack depth in midfield and one further signing in the department – to replace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – would suffice.

Forwards: Kaoru Mitoma, Ivan Toney, Son Heung-min

Tottenham have been free-scoring in their opening eight matches of the campaign, but, again, they can improve in that department. Swooping in to steal Ivan Toney from under the noses of Chelsea and Arsenal would be a major sign of intent from the club and provide them with the focal point required for Postecoglou to play a more direct brand of football when required.

Another left-winger is also likely to be on the transfer shortlist for Tottenham if they receive an injection of transfer funds, and there are few better in Europe than Brighton star Mitoma. The Japan international’s impressive dribbling technique mixed with his impressive pace would see him thrive out wide for Spurs, though he won’t come cheaply given he is in advanced talks to extend his contract at the Amex Stadium.
