Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have always said Halloween was a game-changing holiday for them.
The couple, who first began dating in 2016, became serious in the summer after “bonding” on a vacation in Botswana, and their last big event before the couple made the relationship public was at a costume party also attended by Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie of York, and her now-husband Jack Brooksbank.
In hit Netflix series, Harry & Meghan, the Duke said: “We went to this Halloween party together where we could be completely dressed up and no one would know.”
To which Meghan replied: “We were like ‘Well this might be our last shot to just go out and have fun.'”
As royal watchers are well aware, the tabloid media broke the news of the couple’s dating relationship less than 24 hours after the Halloween party.
And, according to Harry, Halloween was the holiday that “changed everything” for the couple because, from that day forward, the pair were always under a press microscope.
“Everything was changed forever, because the next day was when news of our relationship broke wide open,” he wrote in the best-selling book, Spare.
“Well, we said, staring anxiously at our phones, it was going to happen eventually. In fact, we’d had a heads-up that it was likely to happen that day. We’d been tipped, before heading off to the Halloween Apocalypse, that another apocalypse might be coming. More proof that the universe had a wicked sense of humor.”
Still, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue to enjoy the fun holiday despite the increased press scrutiny since the start of their relationship.
Although the couple has never again been public with their Halloween plans, there’s no doubt that the royal couple remembers the holiday with great fondness.
As a result of the holiday, the couple now have two children: Prince Archie of Sussex and Princess Lilibet Diana of Sussex.
“[We] pull the pin on the fun grenade, of which we did,” Harry said in the docuseries.
