NHS veteran hero, Captain Tom Moore, announced he would be walking 100 laps of his garden for the NHS after his family encouraged him to stretch his legs. But what started as a wholesome fundraiser garnered worldwide attention, throwing Captain Tom and his family into the limelight.

Captain Tom raised around £38m for NHS Charities Together, and unfortunately died in early 2021 from covid-19, less than six months after being knighted.

Capitalising on the energy left in his wake, his family set up a foundation to honour his work and use his “brand” to raise money and awareness for a range of causes.

At the charity’s inception, the family said said: “We are excited by the future direction of the foundation and the opportunities that lie ahead of us, so that we can deliver real change and help to build a more hopeful world.”

Despite winning the hearts of the nation, Captain Tom’s daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore has faced a series of allegations including recent scandals and controversies.

In the run-up to his 100th birthday, the war veteran lifted the country’s spirits at his home in Bedfordshire, as his daughter watched on with pride.

On July 17, 2020, he was personally knighted by late Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle as his family again stood by his side. The fundraising hero was invited to the royal residence which was rare because of the royal honours ceremonies being delayed – because of the pandemic.

The Queen personally praised Captain Sir Tom, telling him: “Thank you so much, an amazing amount of money you raised.”

Sir Captain Tom Moore was also honoured with a World War Two RAF flypast on April 30, 2020, with Hannah Ingram-Moore sitting next to him as he waved on.

Since his passing on February 2, 2021, Ms Ingram-Moore founded the charity The Captain Tom Foundation in May 2020, in her dad’s name, and has not been able to shake off criticism and suspicion.

Watchdog, the Charity Commission has been investigating “potential conflicts of interest” between the charity and the Ingham Moores’ businesses since June 2022.

In the charity’s first year, more than £54,000 was reimbursed to two companies controlled by the Ingram-Moores and her husband, called Club Nook Limited and Maytrix Group Limited.

Responding to the allegations. The foundation suggested they incurred costs “as a newly established charity” and that “expenditure has been incurred in building the team, which for some months worked on a voluntary basis until funds were forthcoming”, as reported by the Mirror.

It then emerged that the Captain Tom Foundation had been blocked by the Charity Commission from making Captain Tom’s daughter the foundation’s CEO. If appointed, she would have been salaried £150,000 a year, though she disputed these claims.

Mrs Ingram-Moore and her husband returned to the spotlight once again amid allegations she had used her father’s name to build a spa and swimming pool complex in her home.

The luxury outbuilding, which houses a pool and changing facilities has been branded a “monstrosity” by nearby residents.

The couple are appealing against an order that would see the £200,000 spa facility at their seven-bedroom Bedfordshire property demolished.

The pair were originally granted permission to build an L-shaped structure in their garden in 2021, with their plans stating the site would be used partly “in connection with The Captain Tom Foundation and its charitable objectives”.

However, last year they submitted a retrospective application for a larger building containing a spa but this was refused by the planning authority.

The appeal hearing on Tuesday, attended by Ms Ingram-Moore, her husband and their son Benji – was told the facility could be used for rehabilitation sessions for the elderly.

Ms Ingram-Moore recently opened up about the death threats she received after £800,000 were made in sales from her dad’s books.

Speaking on Piers Morgan’s show on Talk TV, she said: “These were my father’s books, and it was honestly such a joy for him to write them, but they were his books..He had an agent and they worked on that deal, and his wishes were that money would sit in Club Nook.”

Meanwhile, the foundation has confirmed it is not taking any more funding whilst it “co-operates fully” with the Charity Commission’s inquiry.

A spokesman said: “The Captain Tom Foundation is to ensure that it co-operates fully with the on-going Statutory Inquiry by the Charity Commission.”

As a result, The Captain Tom Foundation is not presently actively seeking any funding from donors.
