Horrific crash closes down town centre after 'pedestrian hit' sparking police warning

A serious collision has shut a road in a UK town centre and there is a large police presence in the area.

Derbyshire police have tweeted this morning to say Market Place in Ilkeston is likely to be closed for some time following the incident in the early hours of this morning.

Their full tweet reads: “Market Place at #Ilkeston is currently closed due to reports of a serious collision.

“It is likely to remain closed for some time and there is a large police presence in the area.

“This may cause some disruption. Further updates will be provided as soon as we are able to.”

It’s been claimed the incident occurred at around 2am and involved a vehicle colliding with a pedestrian. This is unconfirmed at this stage, reports the Nottingham Post.

There are also posts online from people who appear to have been in the area, with one person writing: “Sending my love to everyone who has been affected by the horrific incident on Ilkeston Town Centre tonight, there are truly some horrible people in the world.”

The Market Place in the town is usually full of people walking to and from the many shops, cafes and pubs in the town centre.

But this morning the area is totally empty – many of the businesses with doors locked and lights off and usually busy bus stops quiet.

There is a huge police cordon and there are around six marked police vehicles with officers patrolling.
