'Hazardous substance' leads to families being evacuated and bomb squad called in


Families were evacuated from their homes and the bomb squad called in after a “hazardous substance” was found in a flat.

Police descended on Altyre Street, in the Shettleston area of Glasgow shortly after 5pm on Monday, August 7. Around 80 people from the nearby area were forced to evacuate.

The neighbouring Dalness Street, Ard Street and Trainard Avenue have been closed. Emergency services remained on the scene into the early hours of the morning.

The public is being asked to avoid the area. While those who have been evacuated have now been housed in emergency accommodation.

Chief Superintendent Alan Waddell from Police Scotland, said: “Our enquiries are at an early stage but I would like to reassure the local community that the significant multi-agency response to this incident will continue overnight.

“I would like to thank those affected for their co-operation and advise that everything is being done to allow those evacuated back into their homes as soon as it is safe to do so.

“This incident has caused disruption to many people and I would urge members of the public to avoid the area at this time.”

One neighbour told the Daily Record that residents were told to “drop everything and leave” as the scene was quickly locked down. The woman added: “My friend has an autistic son and they were told to leave immediately, even before collecting his medication.”

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: “We have been assisting the emergency services following the evacuation of residents from a number of flats in the Shettleston area.”
