Harrison Ford, 80, speaks out on his Indiana Jones future after upcoming Dial of Destiny

It’s been 42 years since Harrison Ford debuted as Indiana Jones in Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The Hollywood star and director teamed up for two more outings to complete the 1930s set original trilogy before reuniting in 2008 for the 1950s set Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The fourth film was not as well received, but despite this, 15 years on and they’re back for a fifth adventure set in 1969.

However, this time Spielberg is only on producing duties having roped in Logan director James Mangold to helm Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Considering Ford will be 81 when the blockbuster is released this summer has fans wondering if he’s done with the role and now the star himself has spoken out on the matter.

Speaking with Total Film, Ford confirmed: “This is the final film in the series, and this is the last time I’ll play the character. I anticipate that it will be the last time that he appears in a film.

“I had been ambitious to do this film for 10 years, and there finally came a time when we all committed to that. It was a joyous moment for me. I think it’s a rare situation that I find myself in.

“I’ve been able to deliver amazing films developed by Steven [Spielberg] and George [Lucas] over a 40-year period, and to end it not with a whimper, but a bang, has been my greatest ambition for this excursion.” But the question is will Indy die in the Dial of Destiny?

Director Mangold is an interesting choice to helm the final Indiana Jones movie given that he did the same for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, who died at the end of Logan.

This could well hint at the demise of the adventurer, although in the 1990s prequel TV series, he was portrayed in his 90s by George Hall. Of course, that could be dismissed as non-canonical, so who knows how Ford will say goodbye to his character.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny hits UK cinemas on June 28, 2023.
