Greeks ‘can’t be trusted’ to return Elgin Marbles, historian sensationally claims


He concluded the marbles should not return to Greece without some other form of legal assurance.

Arguments over the sculptures have raged for centuries since they were seized by Lord Elgin in 1799.

The Scottish aristocrat dismantled and obtained artworks from temples on the Acropolis, including roughly half of the Parthenon’s iconic 524-foot-long frieze.

He negotiated the trove from the Ottoman government, which then controlled Greece as one of its territories, using a selection of well-placed bribes.
