Firefighter, 24, dies in French riots after violence continues into sixth day

A firefighter has died with France embroiled in bitter rioting and looting, following the death of a 17-year-old boy at the hands of police last week.

Following on from the 1300 arrests made on Friday, 700 people were arrested the following evening and another 150 were arrested overnight.

Gerald Darmanin, the French interior minister who confirmed that the 24-year-old lost his life in the northern Parisian suburb of Saint-Denis, passed on his sympathies to the fire fighter’s family.

He said: “All my sincere and saddened condolences to his family, loved ones, comrades and to the BSPP [Paris Fire Brigade]”.
