Spain’s Eurovision song ‘Zorra’, which can be translated as an anti-female slur, is causing a stir among conservatives and feminists – while Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has said he likes it.
The tune by Nebulossa was chosen for the Eurovision contest in May and is currently the most viral song in Spain on Spotify.
However, it has faced criticism as the Feminist Movement of Madrid has filed a complaint about the song, claiming it insults women.
Spanish bishop Jose Ignacio Munilla also criticised the song, saying it “denigrates” women. Despite this, Nebulossa singer Maria Bas insists that the song defends women.
Spanish National Television and the duo have decided to translate the title ‘Zorra’ as ‘vixen’ in English for the contest, although the Spanish word is more commonly associated with slurs.
