Donald Trump cruises to another rapid victory in New Hampshire as Nikki Haley on brink

Donald Trump has secured victory in the New Hampshire primary, beating Nikki Haley and all but securing his position as the Republican nominee to take on Joe Biden.

New Hampshire was seen as a crucial state for Haley given that the state usually leans towards the more moderate wing of the Republicans.

Having already secured a dominant victory in the Iowa caucus, Trump has now further boosted his credentials as the favorite to secure the nomination as the campaign heads to South Carolina next.

Haley said prior to the New Hampshire results announcement that, whatever was to happen, she would stay in the race for South Carolina.

A release from her team said: “We’ve heard multiple members of the press say New Hampshire is ‘the best it’s going to get’ for Nikki due to Independents and unaffiliated voters being able to vote in the Republican primary. The reality is that the path through Super Tuesday includes more states than not that have this dynamic.”

Haley also pointed out that South Carolina has no party registration, meaning anyone can vote as long as they haven’t voted in the Democratic primary.

Ron DeSantis, the Florida Governor, pulled out of the race after the Iowa caucus on Sunday before giving his support to Trump.

That left just Trump and Haley in the race, and the two contenders immediately began launching attacks in what has become a tense campaign.

Haley suggested on Sunday that Trump may not be mentally fit for office after a number of recent public gaffes.

Her comments came after Trump appeared to mix up the former UN Ambassador with former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

She said: “We see that Biden has changed so much in two years.

“But last night, Trump is at a rally and he’s going on and on, mentioning me multiple times as to why I didn’t take security during the Capitol riots.

“Why didn’t I handle 6 January better? I wasn’t even in DC on 6 January. I wasn’t in office then.

“They’re saying he got confused, that he was talking about something else, he’s talking about Nancy Pelosi.

“The concern I have is – I’m not saying anything derogatory – but when you’re dealing with the pressures of the presidency, we can’t have someone else that we question whether they’re mentally fit to do this. We can’t.”

During a campaign event that day, Trump said he had undergone a mental fitness test and “aced it.”

He said: “I don’t know if you saw, but a few months ago, I took a cognitive test my doctor gave me.

“I said, ‘give me a cognitive test, just so we can you know,’ because you know what the standards were, and I aced it.”
