Daily habit to keep windscreen clear of ice can save you valuable time in the mornings

If you’re running late on frosty mornings because of a frozen windscreen, this tip is for you.

It’s frustrating to sit in a cold car waiting for the ice to melt, knowing you’ll probably be late for work.

But there’s a simple thing you can do to stop your windscreen from freezing up on chilly winter mornings. It’s easy to do and experts say it works.

The clever folks at Wessex Fleet say the best way to avoid having to defrost your windscreen is to put an insulated waterproof cover on it overnight. This stops the ice from forming in the first place.

The company explained: “When cold weather comes, many drivers benefit from putting an insulated waterproof cover over their windscreen to prevent ice from building up on the windscreen overnight.”

“It’s much more convenient and quicker on a frosty morning to remove a cover than to clear the windscreen, it also reduces the risk of accidental damage caused by the tools used to do so.”

You can buy these covers on Amazon, with the cheapest one costing just £2.99. But if you want to spend a bit more, there are sturdier versions available too.

If you can’t get an insulated windscreen cover, there’s another free tip from the experts: park your car facing the rising sun.

Wessex Fleet added: “This may help defrost your car quicker, and act as a natural de-icer in the cold mornings.”

It’s crucial to make sure your windscreen, windows, lights, number plate and mirrors are all completely defrosted before you start driving. If not, you could be breaking the Highway Code and risk getting fined.

The Highway Code rules 228-231 talk about driving in icy or snowy weather.

Rule 229 specifically says: “You must be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows.”

The rule adds “you must ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible” and that drivers must ensure “the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly”.
