Prince Harry’s claim Meghan Markle is “magic” after the pair sang to seals in Scotland has been described as “completely ridiculous”. The story came after then-Prince Charles told the Duchess about sirens disguised as seals in folklore – creatures known as “selkies” whom the Duke would later thank for Meghan’s pregnancy.
Harry explained how, when visiting Scotland, seals “responded” to Meghan’s singing – which he took as confirmation that she “really was magic”.
The story was met with surprise from former aide to Margaret Thatcher Nile Gardiner, who responded: “This just sounds completely ridiculous.”
In his memoir, Spare, which is being officially published tomorrow but was released early in Spain, Prince Harry described a time when he, Meghan and his father were visiting the north coast of Scotland, reports the Telegraph. Over dinner one night, the King told them the story of selkies – Scottish sirens that disguise themselves as seals in Celtic and Norse mythology, and told the Duchesses to sing to the seals to see if they would respond.
Harry wrote that at the time, King Charles and Meghan had a “strong bond”, with his father often enjoying “peacocking in front of Meg” by telling stories with “much theatre”.
The family were staying at the Castle of Mey – a royal castle bought by the Queen Mother in the 50s. The following day, while on the beach, the Sussexes spotted a pair of seals – prompting Harry to run over to sing to them.
However, when he failed to get a response, Meghan joined him, and then, he wrote, the seals answered.
The Duke explains in the book: “Soon enough, an endless number of heads began to appear in every part of the water, responding to her song.”
He said that at that moment, he thought Meghan “really is magic”.
