Charles 'alienated' Royal Family and public in early stages of Camilla relationship

Katie Nicholl, author of The New Royals, told the documentary: “Camilla was absolutely reviled in England, hated by a lot of people. But to Charles, she was his absolute pillar of strength. She was his rock, and really she was everything to him.”

Charles was determined to continue his relationship with Camilla. as Ms Nicholl explained: “Anyone close to the Prince of Wales, and that included his mother, knew that when it came to Camilla, she was non-negotiable.

“And Charles made that very clear from the outset. He hadn’t gone through everything he’d been through: the public humiliation, the admitting of adultery, not to be with Camilla at the very end of it.”

Thus, the future King set about improving his image and regaining the public’s respect. A slow and coordinated public relations exercise by the couple followed, orchestrated by Charles’s advisers to make their relationship appear appropriate.

Following the tragic death of Princess Diana in 1997, both their public images were further damaged, with Camilla not only blamed for the breakdown of the Waleses’ marriage but also the Princess’s death.
