BBC's Melvin Odoom recalls warning about Prince William and Kate Middleton at royal event

Melvin Odoom, 42, who is known for his work on the Kiss 100 radio breakfast show and BBC Radio 1, spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about some stern warnings he received ahead of DJing a sophisticated charity event that had multiple royals in attendance.

The star is a celebrity ambassador for The Prince’s Trust charity, which is involved with helping young adults transform their lives.

Melvin described how, despite prior warnings, he had unexpected encounters with Kate Middleton and Prince Harry at the event where Prince William was also in attendance.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star, who teamed up with car company Motorpoint to celebrate its 25th anniversary earlier this year, recalled his eventful DJ set for a charity event that happened a few years ago.

“I was doing a charity do for William and Kate and it was for various mental health charities,” Melvin explained.

He then remembered that he was warned: “‘Melvin, you’re only going to really get to meet either Will or Kate at most, because one of them will be in one room and the other will be in another room’.

He continued: “So I was in this room and they were like, ‘Melvin, make sure all the music is clean. No swearing. Make sure it’s all commercial stuff.’ So I was like, cool.”

However, Melvin ended up getting more face time with the royals than he had bargained for.

“I was just there concentrating on my set,” he recalled. “And then I heard a, ‘Hello, excuse me.’ And I looked up and it was Kate.

“She was like, ‘What are you up to?’ and I was like, ‘Oh I’m just spinning, is there anything you’d like to hear?’

“She told me, ‘You know what you’re doing,’ and she shook my hand and she was just really pleasant. And then she disappeared.”

Melvin described how, later on, another surprise was in store for him at the eventful gig.

“I kind of had to finish for the evening, so I started packing up my stuff,” he said.

“And then I heard some guy go, ‘Do you take any requests mate?’ And I was like, ‘What?’

“I looked up and it was Harry! I didn’t even know he was there! He was hilarious and he gave me a high five or something and then he just ran off.”

Mevlin concluded by saying he had been “really lucky to meet a lot of the royal family”, with the star also previously having met King Charles when he hosted award ceremonies for the Prince’s Trust as part of his ambassador role.

Elsewhere in the interview, Melvin spoke all about his work with car company Motorpoint.

New research of UK drivers has named multiple airbags, GPS satellite navigation and reversing cameras among the most significant developments in automotive history.

A study of 2,000 adults with a driving licence by Motorpoint found three in 10 could not live without the gadgetry in their car, with other popular inventions including power steering and parking sensors.

Motorists also named the introduction of hybrid and electric vehicles as game-changing, while others welcomed adaptive cruise control and auto-defrosting windshields.

The research was commissioned by Motorpoint to celebrate its 25th anniversary, during which time it has sold over a million vehicles since opening its first store in Derby and now has 19 stores across the UK.

To mark a quarter of a century, Motorpoint has partnered with Melvin and put him to the ultimate ‘Motormind’ automotive knowledge test, where he scored a respectable six out 10.

Melvin is working with Motorpoint to celebrate the nearly new car retailer’s 25th anniversary.
