Balmy 15C African plume to hit UK before spring hopes dashed by 383-mile snow bomb

Brits hoping for a respite from freezing conditions will be smashed by a 383-mile snow bomb as the latest weather maps show wintry temperatures making a return. The latest maps suggest that parts of Britain will be covered with snow on March 21 and 22, a day after the temperature levels are predicted to reach 15C in the south.

An African plume is likely to hit the country in the coming days which will push the mercury level upward to double digits.

However, the hot weather conditions are not likely to stay for long, the latest maps have revealed.

Areas covering from Wick to Newcastle could witness possible snow showers on March 21 with the temperature levels plummeting to -5C in some areas of Scotland.

The weather pattern across the country has been on a roller-coaster ride with periodic rain, snow, and several storms.

The Met Office has warned that a once-in-a-250-year weather event is underway that could bring with it bitter wintry conditions. A Sudden Stratospheric Warning (SSW) event usually hits the UK every other year.

WXCharts maps indicate that areas such as Wick, Inverness, Portress, and Aberdeen could see up to 2cm of snow depth on March 22.

Moving southwards, snow showers of 1 cm per hour could fall in areas like Newcastle, maps suggest.

The Met Office’s long-range forecast between March 15 and 24 suggests: “From the end of the week a broadly unsettled pattern continues.

“Friday likely seeing longer spells of rain clearing northern areas whilst showers, sometimes heavy with thunderstorms developing elsewhere, though some brighter spells at times and clearing skies overnight.

“Temperatures feeling mild out of the fresh winds. Through the weekend further bands of rain expected to push in from the west and southwest, breaking to showers at times.

“Into the new week temperatures trend down toward average for the time of year as the broadly unsettled pattern continues with periods of rain, heaviest in western areas push across the country to be followed by occasional showers, with a risk of thunderstorms mainly in the south.”

Today:

Cloudy skies today with mist and murk around eastern coasts. Outbreaks of drizzle will continue in the east, and light rain will spread across Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Largely dry elsewhere, perhaps with some brighter spell in the southwest.

Tonight:

Cloudy and mostly dry at first this evening. Heavy rain will move into western areas later in the night with brisk winds. Staying frost free under the blanket of cloud.

Tuesday:

Outbreaks of rain will spread across the UK, turning heavy at times. Becoming a little drier in southern England during the afternoon. Breezy for most and windy in the west.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Rain continuing this week, particularly in the northwest where it will be occasionally heavy. Some fine and dry weather in the southeast at times. Turning milder through the week.
