Americans call King Charles' Coronation 'abomination' and 'turn off TVs for Meghan'

King Charles’s Coronation has been branded an “abomination” by furious Americans, who have branded the new monarch “fake” and have vowed to turn off their TVs in support of Meghan Markle.

Harry is at today’s historic occasion while wife Meghan has remained at home with the couple’s two young children – Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

But the weeks and months leading up to today’s historic event have been dominated by rift between the Sussexes and the Royal Family.

Meghan and Harry made several claims against the royal institution in their Netflix documentary series, while just a few weeks later, criticism intensified with the Duke’s tell-all memoir, Spare.

However, many Americans have taken to social media to launch a furious attack against the Coronation and in particular King Charles, vowing to turn off their TVs in support of Meghan.

According to a survey by Redfield & Wilton Strategies, 42 percent approved of Meghan’s choice, including 16 percent who strongly approved.

Only 12 percent disapproved, including five percent who strongly disapproved, while 37 percent neither approved nor disapproved and nine percent said they did not know.

The survey also saw 30 percent say Harry should spend more time in the UK, while 16 percent felt he shouldn’t and 36 percent did not care.

Asked whether King Charles should visit Harry and Meghan in California, 33 percent felt he should.

The survey had a representative sample of 1,500 Americans, polled for Newsweek on April 30.

Elsewhere, many Americans are also furious at First Lady Jill Biden for attending the Coronation in the UK today. She is attending without husband and US President Joe Biden.

The First Lady wrote on her Twitter account: “Headed to the UK for the Coronation of King Charles III – the first in 70 years!

“It’s an honour to represent the United States for this historic moment and celebrate the special relationship between our countries.”

Americans voiced their opinions on the social media platform, but many were far from happy.

One wrote: “Seems disrespectful to be honest. The first Coronation in 70 years and we’re sending bkfst taco lady as our rep? [sic]”

The comment was a reference to a speech in which Biden said Texas Latinos are as “unique” as “breakfast tacos”.

She later apologised through her spokesman Michael LaRosa, who tweeted: “The First Lady apologises that her words conveyed anything but pure admiration and love for the Latino community. [sic]”

One Twitter user remarked: “Who is paying for this trip? I heard the country was broke.”

Another, who seemed to agree, said: “It’s not our county or a real government position. Stay home and don’t waste our money.”

“I would prefer if our President was there to represent us for this historical event with our closest friends,” another said.

One said: “As an American, I stopped caring about the monarchy with King George – circa 1776.”

Another commented: “What an insult to the new King & people of the Commonwealth.”

Someone else wrote: “Taxpayer money to go honour someone who is honouring themselves. Sad.”
