Alexander Zverev’s lawyers have released a statement after the world No 9 was issued a penalty order for bodily harm against his ex-girlfriend and fined a total of £392,000 (€450,000). Zverev has denied the charge and is contesting the penalty order. The German’s lawyers said he would “take action against this using all means possible.”
The Berlin criminal courts confirmed that Zverev was issued a penalty order on October 2. “The defendant is accused of physically abusing a woman and damaging her health as part of an argument in Berlin in May 2020,” the court said.
A district court also imposed a fine of 90 daily rates set at £4,400 (€5,000) each, totalling £392,000 (€450,000). The Berlin courts also confirmed that Zverev had “lodged an objection” and the 26-year-old’s lawyers have released a statement.
“The procedure is scandalous, there can be no question of a fair, constitutional procedure. Mr Zverev will take action against this using all means possible,” they said. “Mr Zverev rejects the accusation made against him. The allegations made by the complainant which alone form the basis for the penalty order, have already been refuted by a forensic medical report.”

The Berlin public prosecutor’s office applied for a criminal order to be issued against the tennis star back in July. After a proposal is made, the court must decide whether to issue the penalty order, as they have in Zverev’s case.
There is then a two-week window to lodge an objection, which triggers a public trial. Tiergarten district court is now set to “hear from those involved in the proceedings again” and a hearing date will likely be set afterwards.
