Zara Tindall opens up on ‘bittersweet’ Royal Ascot after King’s horse wins stunning race

An emotional Zara Phillips described King Charles and Queen Camilla’s Royal Ascot win as “bittersweet” as Queen Elizabeth II would have been “proud” had she been alive to see the triumph.

Speaking to ITV the royal Olympian said: “It’s bittersweet isn’t it? To think how proud our Grandmother The Queen would have been but to have a winner for Charles and Camilla and keep that dream alive was incredible”.

It was the King’s first Ascot winner and he appeared visibly emotional at the result.

The 18-1 shot Desert Hero won the King George V Stakes, ridden by Tom Marquand.
