X Factor star charged with murder of nine-month-old baby girl after five-year police probe

Mitchell Callaway, who became famous after appearing on the Australian X Factor as a contestant in 2011, has been charged with murdering a nine-month-old baby.

On Thursday morning, he was seen being led from a home in Bowraville, New South Wales, following his arrest.

After arriving at Macksville Police Station, he was charged with the murder of the baby, following an almost five-year-long investigation.

The 37-year-old appeared at Macksville local court, where he did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

He is now due to appear before Coffs Harbour local court on Tuesday.

The charge is in connection with the death of a child that happened in July 2018.

Emergency services rushed to a home in Binnaway after receiving reports of an unresponsive baby girl at about 10am on July 23, 2018.

The young child was taken by paramedics to Coonabarabran Hospital but sadly died despite the best efforts of medical staff who tried to help her.

Detectives from Orana Mid-Western Police District have been investigating the death under Strike Force King.

In late May, a search warrant was executed at a Binnaway home after officers received new information.

The arrest of the country singer came after investigators carried out further inquiries.

Callaway appeared in the third season of the X Factor show down under.

He joined the Over-25s category and was mentored by musician Natalie Bassingthwaighte.

He was eliminated from the televised contest during its sixth week, after losing a sing-off with Johnny Ruffo.
