Wrexham have kicked off the new year by securing the services of key men Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee until 2027 upon the opening of the transfer window. The former’s talismanic efforts last term helped the Red Dragons to achieve promotion, while the latter is the club’s current top scorer this season.
The North Wales outfit’s co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have wasted no time in showing they mean business as the team chases back-to-back promotions. The Hollywood superstars made seven senior signings in the summer, with their ambition paying dividends in the early months of the League Two campaign.
With Wrexham currently occupying third position in the fourth tier, the move to tie down two firm fan favourites to new deals will do no harm to the morale within the camp at the Racecourse Ground. Star striker Mullin was ruled out for the opening weeks of the season after sustaining a shoulder injury while on tour in the US in pre-season.
After plundering a staggering 38 strikes in the National League to fire Wrexham back to the EFL after a 15 absence, he has demonstrated his quality again this term with eight goals in 16 league outings since his return from injury. This haul includes a memorable hat-trick against Morecambe which saw him announce his return from the sidelines in consumate style.
Mullin could not hide his glee after signing another new deal with the club, with the affable Liverpudlian confessing: “I’m unbelievably happy and grateful to extend my stay at Wrexham. Since signing for the club, I’ve loved every single second. It’s not just become my Club, but my whole family also.”
“The chance to perform in front of the support we receive is something you long for as a child,” the 29-year-old striker continued as he looked forward to another three years leading the line for the club. “Here’s to creating more memories to last a lifetime – up the town!”
Likewise, Lee has been pivotal for the Dragons so far this campaign as they made an impressive return to the EFL after so many years in the National League. The attacking midfielder has been one of the league’s standout performers, netting 13 times in 24 appearances for Wrexham.
This impressive tally makes him the club’s most potent force so far this term as he builds upon his strong showings in the previous campaign. He scored 12 goals in 45 league outings last year – notching the first and last strikes of the Dragons’ season – after signing from then-Championship side Luton Town.
Like Mullin, the former West Ham United trainee was overjoyed at penning a new three-year agreement with the League Two club. He said: “It means a lot. When I signed 18 months ago, there were high expectations but not I even saw just how well it was going to go. I’m delighted to be extending my stay with Wrexham.
Lee added: “It’s a special feeling playing for the Club. Growing up, it was Newcastle and West Ham I had an affinity too and wanted to play for, but I feel I have that now with Wrexham. To represent the team, the badge and the people of Wrexham is a special feeling – I love playing playing for the Club.”
