A cleaning guru has solved a rather smelly issue that has baffled thousands of people across the country who have opened their fridges to an unpleasant odour that they have just not been able to track down.
It appears that after throwing out all possible causes from the fridge, including old veg and foodstuffs well past their use-by date, people have still found themselves confronted with the awful stench.
But at last someone has discovered a little-known compartment that could be the true culprit. Cleaning guru Leanne found the cause of the issue first-hand when the dreadful scent of her fridge began to spread into other rooms in her home.
Sharing her story on the video-streaming service TikTok, Leanne, whose @cleaningmummy channel has more than 750,000 followers, expressed her shock at discovering her fridge had a hidden tray at the back that she did not know about. Since sharing the clip online, Leanne’s video has gathered more than 283,000 views.

Introducing her video post, she wrote: “Did you know there was a fridge tray? How did you find out? When did you last clean it?”
She continued: “Have you got a smell in your house, kitchen, or a smell that you think is coming from the fridge, but you’ve cleaned it, emptied it, and can’t get rid of the smell? This is more than likely where the smell’s coming from — there’s a tray at the back of your fridge.”
During the clip, the mum filmed herself pulling out the fridge and looking round the back to investigate. There, she cleaned away some debris on the floor, then discovered a hose that ran down the back of the fridge — and it seemed this was contributing to the nasty smell.
She said: “Pull out your fridge, go to the bottom, and there’s a pipe that runs down, which anything that leaks in your fridge runs down into this tray.
“You need to clear it. You can unscrew them and give them a wash if they’re really bad. Mine wasn’t that bad because it’s a new fridge, so I managed to get a cloth in there and give it a good wiping.
“If anything gets down there, it will smell disgusting. It will smell your whole house out. This is how I found out there was a tray in the first place.”
The Mirror reported that since sharing her advice, Leanne’s TikTok post received more than a hundred comments from grateful householders. One wrote: “Oh god, I’ve never done mine, must be awful! Thanks for the great tip.” A second said: “Fab fridge tray clean.”
Alarmingly, another TikTok fan who carried out an inspection after watching the video, found another cause of the stench behind the fridge. They said: “I had a smell behind mine, disgusting smell. . . found this video and gave it a shot — it was a dead fat rat that got stuck behind my fridge.”
