Woman who broke up with boyfriend 12 months ago still meets up with him for sex

A woman who has been having sex with her ex-boyfriend for a year after they broke up has complained she feels “hollow” afterwards. The anonymous woman sent a letter to journalists Annabel Rivkin and Emilie McKeekan saying she would have “semi-regular” sex with her former partner. Past polls have shown for some people they keep having sex with former partners without the relationship.

Ms Rivkin and McKeekan write a column in The Telegraph called The Midults – a term the journalists invented on their blog to describe a unique group of women aged 35 – 55 who are “funny, digitally literate, and extremely anxious”.

The anonymous woman wrote that sex with her partner was “always great” but it would never leave her feeling good afterwards.

She said she has to “really concentrate on not fixating on him for a week or so after it happens”.

In response, Midult experts Rivkin and McKeekan offered some words of advice to the writer of the letter.

They explained she should be “careful” her attempt to not lose the boyfriend doesn’t “start twisting into feelings that you think are love but are in fact just familiar pain.”

The anonymous letter said: “My ex-boyfriend and I broke up nearly a year ago but we are still having semi-regular sex. The sex is always great but I never feel very good afterwards and I have to really concentrate on not fixating on him for a week or so after it happens. He never follows up with any contact and then I feel hollow. Then it happens again.

“Is it OK to carry on like this just because I crave the physical thrill and the comfort? I know that sex with someone new won’t be as good.”

A poll of 1,000 conducted by seekingarrangement.com found the majority of women who resort to sex with their exes do this because they “miss physical intimacy”

However, many also do it in a bid to reignite a relationship, although this is equally something men are likely to do too, according to the research.
