Woman horrified after finding out sofa she ‘sold for £350 is worth £14,000’

A woman has been left horrified after finding out a sofa she sold for £350 is now worth £14,000. TikTok user Jules Schreiner told the platform that she originally thought she’d made a good deal selling her old sofa for $500 (£300) on Facebook Marketplace.

Months after selling the sofa, Ms Schreiner noticed that the person who’d bought her sofa was now reselling it as they believed it was a Vladimir Kagan design.

Vladimir Kagan was an iconic mid-century designer who was inducted into the Interior Designer Hall of Fame in 2009. His products normally sell for large sums of money.

When Ms Schreiner, from Illinois, USA, found a similar Kagan sofa being sold online for $20,000 (£14,000) she was distraught that she hadn’t done more research before selling her sofa.

She told TikTok: “Thought I had got a great deal on FB market place but ya know things are always too good to be true.[sic]”

The video was watched thousands of times by viewers, many of whom were sympathetic to Ms Schreiner’s blunder.

One person commented: “My mum used to work for a high-end brand, I didn’t know about what I searched it up I was like no way.”

Another person added: “Ok so from now on, we are going to look for name brands on the things we buy ok? LOL then we are going to Google them.”

Someone else reassured Ms Schreiner, they said: “It’s only worth that much if someone is willing to pay I think you made out just fine getting $500 for a discoloured old couch.”

Others added that the image recognition software Google Lens was helpful in finding out if you own something designer with hidden value.
