A woman in the United States has been charged with purchasing firearms for her 30-year-old son. Prosecutors say the son, who lived in her basement, allegedly wanted to kill Joe Biden and members of the LGBTQ community.
Michelle Berka, 56, from east Michigan, is alleged to have bought at least four guns that were found in the possession of her son Randall Berka II, say prosecutors. They say he was arrested in March.
Randall Berka II allegedly made online threats against the United States President, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and member of the LGBTQ community. His mom’s federal indictment was unsealed last week, reports the New York Daily News.
the FBI said the would-be shooter was involuntarily committed for mental health treatment in 2012 and declared incapacitated. This means he is barred from having guns in Michigan, reports The Associated Press.
Berka reportedly told the FBI she was “scared” of her son and believed he should be incarcerated. She now faces up to a decade behind bars is convicted of buying her three rifles and a handgun.
Just 70 miles south of the Berka’s Sebewaing property, the parents of school shooter Ethan Crumbley – accused of killing four students in 2021 – were charged with manslaughter after prosecutors claimed their armed their “feral” 15-year-old.
Crumbley, who pleaded guilty to murder and terrorism, is currently awaiting a sentencing hearing that could see him jailed for life. Crumbley had originally entered an insanity defence before changing his plea to guilty.
