Wimbledon crash children remain critically ill as eye-witnesses speak out on horror

Several children remain in a critical condition in hospital after a Land Rover ploughed into an end-of-term tea party at a school in Wimbledon.

An 8-year-old girl, who has not been named, died at the scene.

Terrorism has been ruled out as a motive for the awful ordeal, and the woman behind the wheel is believed to have suffered a “medical incident”.

She has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Amongst the injured includes a baby, after the two-tonne 4×4 drove into the celebration at the all-girls prep school.

The car smashed through the school’s wooden fence at around 10am before crossing the grass, sending staff and students alike sprawling.

A witness, who drove past the school a matter of moments after the crash, told the Times that the scene was “very shocking”.

The 53-year-old man said: “The girls were screaming – it was harrowing. Everyone was rushing, saying a car had just driven into the grounds.”
