William 'should not' have taken over as King as he 'needs to learn' his future role

Prince William is finally starting to feel comfortable in his new role as Prince of Wales and should never take over King Charles as monarch before his time, a royal historian has claimed.

And they said that people need to let the royal learn his new role and prepare for his future one as head of the monarchy.

A survey published this September suggested more than four in 10 Brits thought that William and not Charles should have taken over from the Queen.

And it showed that nearly two-thirds of us want the King and Queen to start handing over power and responsibility to William and Kate.

But royal historian Marlene Koenig has hit back at these claims and said that the Prince of Wales has been doing a great job in his new role and he should continue to do so so he can learn the ropes of his future one as King of the United Kingdom.

She told Express.co.uk: “William can’t be King, because Charles is already a great King.

“It was a seamless transition from the death of his mother to his ascension and he came prepared.

“Who would want to put such a burden on his son, when he’s only just starting to feel comfortable in his new role?”

The royal historian went on to say that the Prince of Wales along with his wife, the Princess of Wales, have been doing a great job during their recent royal engagements and their efforts have been “very well received” by the public.

“People need to let them enjoy their current roles and learn their future ones as King and Queen,” she claimed.

Last week, Mrs Koenig said the Prince of Wales doesn’t need his wife to make his “big day” in Singapore a success.

She said: “We have seen how they’ve changed royal engagements and how they’ve been reaching out to communities and supporting serious causes like early childhood, mental health and education.

“They are able to talk about serious matters, without making it political and that contributes to their success.”

She added: “Who goes to work every day with his wife?”

It comes as Princess Kate was earlier criticised for staying in the UK while her husband will be travelling to Singapore.

The royal was branded a “reluctant traveller” by a columnist who noted she had only been out of the country on official business twice this year.
