William looks forward to 'exciting summer' as he congratulates Lionesses' official squad


Prince William has congratulated the upcoming Lionesses squad following the official announcement for the World Cup. The Prince of Wales, who is president of the Football Association (FA) said he is looking forward to an “exciting summer” for the women’s team. On the Prince and Princess of Wales official Twitter, he said: “An exciting summer ahead for a team that’s already achieved so much and inspired so many. Congratulations to every member of the @Lionesses squad and good luck! W”.

Prince William has championed women’s football in the past few years, particularly after the Euro 2022 final was won by the Lionesses.

The football fan watched the team bring it home in a 2-1 win over Germany at Wmbley Stadium before handing over their medal and personally congratulating them.

The royal even ditched protocol to give team members a hug as they made they way across the pitch.

Earlier this month the future king also attended the Women’s FA Cup final where he shook hands with Chelsea and Liverpool players ahead of the game.

It comes after Sarina Wiegman named her 23-woman World Cup squad on Wednesday afternoon, with seven changed to the Euro 2022 winning side.

The squad in full features goalkeepers; Mary Earps, Ellie Roebuck, Hannah Hampton alongside defenders Millie Bright, Niamh Charles, Alex Greenwood, Esme Morgan, Lotte Wubben-Moy, Jess Carter, Lucy Bronze.

Midfielders line up Laura Coombs, Jordan Nobbs, Ella Toone, Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway, Katie Zelem.

And forwards include Bethany England, Lauren Hemp, Rachel Daly, Alessia Russo, Katie Robinson, Lauren James, Chloe Kelly as well as Maya Le Tissier, Jess Park and Emily Ramsey as reserves.
