Donald Trump is facing potential prison time after he was indicted by a Georgia grand jury this week along with 18 others. The 77-year-old former President of the United States has until next Friday to turn himself in at Fulton County Jail.
If Trump is found guilty of the allegations he could face decades in prison. He has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. But would he be allowed conjugal visits if found guilty?
What is a conjugal visit?
The conjugal visit is scheduled private time with a loved one given to incarcerated people usually with a spouse, during which spousal activities are permitted to take place.
Will Donald Trump be allowed conjugal visits if he is incarcerated?
If Donald Trump goes to prison, he would likely go to a federal prison. Conjugal visits are not a federal right, so Trump would not enjoy conjugal visits with Melania.
Matthew Mangino is an attorney the former district attorney of Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, and he explained more. He told Daily Express US: “The Federal Bureau of Prisons and Texas Department of Corrections do not allow conjugal visits. A handshake, hug or light kiss may be allowed during a visit.”
Some state prisons do allow conjugal visits, but only four – and it’s not a given in every state prison in those states. Mr. Mangino went on: “Only four states in the country allow such visits. New York allows conjugal visits in its family reunion program.”
This generally applies to “low-security institutions” if the “inmate has good behavior.”
In these cases: “The inmate and spouse/family stay in a cabin within the facility for 24 hours. But it’s not available in every New York facility.”
California, Connecticut, and Washington also allow conjugal visits.
