'Why shouldn't she?' Meghan Markle 'could return to acting' following new Netflix film

Meghan Markle could return to acting after her and Prince Harry’s latest Netflix project, according to a PR expert.

The move will see the couple produce a film or series adaptation of the bestselling novel Meet Me at the Lake.

According to PR expert Rhea Freeman, Meghan is unlikely to star in the upcoming adaptation but it does present an opportunity for the former TV star to get back in the acting game.

“I think that it would be better to see Meghan in a producer role, not because of her talent for acting, but because the focus of the film would be on Meghan rather than the story, and the critics would dine out of this, however good she was,” Ms Freeman told Daily Express US.

However, she believes a return to the silver screen could “be on the cards” for Meghan and likened her to actress Reese Witherspoon who sometimes acts in and produces her own movies and shows.

“The other argument is ‘why shouldn’t she?’ I guess that’s linked to the overall objective of Archewell Productions – is it purely to re-establish Meghan as an actress or is it to tell stories that are perfect for adaptation?” the PR expert added.

If the adaptation of Carley Fortune’s bestseller is successful, it’s possible the move could catapult the Duchess of Sussex back into her previous profession.

Ms Freeman added: “My gut feeling would be that the next project of this nature would be a good place for Meghan to resume a role in front of the camera too, when, hopefully, Meet Me at the Lake has been a huge success as that would be a good platform to build the Archewell Productions brand on a deeper level.”

Meghan Markle played Rachel Zane – a paralegal-turned-attorney – on the hit TV drama Suits from 2011 to 2018.

However, as she began a relationship with Prince Harry the Duchess left her day job behind. In 2017, she wrapped up filming the seventh series of Suits and went on to marry the Prince in 2018.

Members of the Royal Family are typically asked to give up their day jobs to serve the Crown but now that Harry and Meghan have split with the Firm all bets are off.

Since the split, the couple have embarked on a number of projects including the publication of Prince Harry’s tell-all memoir Spare and a deal with audio streaming service Spotify which has since gone bust.

The Sussexes also signed a deal with Netflix reportedly worth a staggering $100 million (£79 million). It saw them create a six-part docuseries detailing their relationship, marriage and split with the firm.

Now the streaming service reportedly shelled out around £3 million buying the film rights to Meet Me at the Lake so the Duke and Duchess can try their hand at producing.

The bestselling novel draws parallels to Meghan and Harry’s own lives. It follows a couple who meet in their 30s while dealing with issues of trauma including one character losing a parent in a car crash at a young age.
