White House grounds evacuated as US secret service calls in hazmat team

The grounds of the White House in Washington DC were evacuated on Sunday (July 2) when the United States Secret Service (USSS) called in hazardous materials specialists to deal with an “unknown item”.

Secret Service units blocked off roads around the US President’s official residence, while a DC Fire Department hazmat team was scrambled to the scene to investigate. The scare was sparked by what was described by the USSS as an “unknown item”.

The object was found by USSS Uniform Division Officers. No further details about the nature of the object have been released at this stage.

A USSS spokesperson told Fox News Digital: “US Secret Service Uniform Division Officers located an unknown item on the White House complex. As a precaution, the White House grounds were evacuated, and the DC Fire Departments Hazmat team responded.”

All road closures have now been lifted, the spokesperson confirmed.
