'We are taking the public for fools!' – Express exposes Tory MPs' record immigration anger

Right-wing Tory MPs are “absolutely furious” over the record migration figures which have been released today, with the Express’s senior political correspondent Christian Calgie detailing their anger in exclusive text messages.

Net migration for the UK hit a record 745,000 in 2022 according to ONS figures, with one unnamed red wall MP explaining how “we, the Tory Party, are taking the public as fools”.

Speaking to GB News, Calgie said the same Conservative MP went on to ask: “What’s the point of a Tory government who can’t be bothered controlling immigration?”

Calgie also reported that the “official WhatsApp group of Tory MPs was remarkably quiet”, pointing out that if there was no chat in that group, “where are those conversations happening, and why don’t they want people to see them?”

A different Tory MP sarcastically replied to a text from Calgie: “People are celebrating on the streets – they love a bit of uncontrolled immigration.”

Another Red Wall Conservative MP told Calgie that “the government is trotting out some bull**** line that we’ve cut net immigration” and that “after last year’s figures were revised upwards”, this latest announcement “isn’t going to cut it either”.

The MP also sent Calgie a meme of the infamous red Brexit Bus, with a different slogan, reading: “This year’s migration figures aren’t too bad, because last year’s were actually much worse than we thought.”

It comes after the government’s plan to send illegal migrants to Rwanda was blocked for the second time, now by the UK Supreme Court, because of the risk that Rwanda would send refugees back to their country of origin.

Nevertheless, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak seems to be open to the idea of ignoring the Supreme Court ruling and disapplying the Human Rights Act in an emergency bill.
