Water pours through Costco ceiling as thunderstorm hits Manchester

Shoppers ran for cover when water gushed through the ceiling of a Costco store in Greater Manchester on Monday evening during a terrifying thunderstorm.

Heavy rain, thunder and lightning suddenly hit parts of the region in the North West, with roads becoming almost instantly flooded and trees falling down in what was described as “end-of-the-world weather”.

Video footage taken from the Costco Warehouse on Barton Dock Road, Trafford Park, Manchester, on Monday showed the moment water began pouring through the roof as shoppers watched on in amazement.

Huge puddles could be seen forming on the floor as members of the store whipped out their phones to begin filming, while others were seen attempting to dodge the cascading water.

One shopper told the Manchester Evening News that the incident unfolded around 7pm.

Roads also flooded elsewhere on Monday, including in Salford, as video footage showed motorists driving gingerly through torrents of water created by the sudden heavy downpour.

The hot weather also gave way to the rain, thunder and lightning just as Manchester City’s treble winning parade was getting under way, leaving thousands of supporters and onlookers soaked.

The event was delayed for more than an hour with organisers concerned about lightning strikes, with a stage show also halted due to safety concerns.

Costco has been contacted for comment.
