Watch terrifying moment crane collapses 'slicing through house' nearly crushing a child

Wigan residents had to be put into emergency accommodation after a huge crane sliced through the roofs of their homes.

The crane was on a lorry and was being used to transport a storage container. However, the vehicle overbalanced and toppled on Saturday morning.

Video footage from a Ring doorbell shows one woman and at least one child’s narrow escape after the lorry toppled.

In the 44-second video posted on X, a child could be seen cycling in a circle on the drive of a family home, before a woman told her to head inside as the lorry began to teeter.

She shouted at the little girl: “Stand here. Quick, quick, quick, quick, run!”

Seconds later, the lorry topples and the container barrels into the property.

Images from the scene show how the crane smashed through the home, causing devastating damage to the home on Flapper Fold Lane in Atherton, Wigan.

A witness claimed the container “sliced” through the end-of-terrace house. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Rescue workers could be seen trying to remove the crane, from where it jammed into the property. The lorry, which lay on its side in the road, was also towed away.

Although the precise cause of the incident has not yet been confirmed, Storm Kathleen battered the area with strong winds yesterday.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire Rescue Service said: “At around 10:30am on April 6), firefighters were called to reports of a crane that had fallen through the side of a residential property in Atherton, Wigan.

“One fire engine from Atherton fire station quickly arrived at the scene, where a lorry carrying the crane had overturned in the roadway.

“Greater Manchester Police established a cordon on the street, while firefighters worked to isolate the gas and electricity to the property and clear spilled fuel from the roadway.

“The scene has now been left with GMP and the crane operating company to arrange recovery of the crane.

“The occupants are being supported by the local authority to find temporary accommodation.”
