VOTE: Who is your favourite Conservative politician?

The Conservatives will gather in Manchester this weekend for their annual party conference with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak due to set out his long-term vision.

The four-day conference will bring MPs, ministers, lobbyists and journalists together for a series of fringe events, speeches and receptions from Sunday, October 1 to Wednesday, October 4 at the Central Convention Complex.

This will be Mr Sunak’s first conference of his premiership and he will speak on the final day of the conference with the hope of reversing Labour’s double-digit lead in the polls by focusing attention on his long-term priorities.

Mr Sunak’s recent net-zero announcement, education policy, inheritance tax and the HS2 project, are all likely to dominate discussions at the conference.

Senior Tories including Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, Home Secretary Suella Braverman and Leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt are also due to make addresses during the conference. Former Prime Ministers Liz Truss and Theresa May are also set to speak.

Political commentator Matthew Goodwin said that the Tories are “firm underdogs” going into the general election, so this year’s conference has extra importance.

He told AFP: “They are languishing in the polls while Rishi Sunak’s own ratings have been weakening in recent months.

“Sunak will be wanting to use the event and his speech to project the major themes of the looming campaign and to also try and disassociate himself firmly from the unpopular premierships of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss.”
