Victim shot then 'chopped up' in viscous sword attack at sports contest that wounded three

Three people have been wounded during a sword attack at a sports contest in Derbyshire.

During the attack at the Derby Kabaddi grounds in Alvaston, Derbyshire, a man was allegedly shot and then “chopped up” with a sword, according to an eyewitness.

Video footage shared on Twitter seems to show crowds running away as what are thought to be gunshots are heard during the incident around 4 pm yesterday.

Meanwhile, broadcast footage of the tournament by the Panjab Broadcasting Channel shows live commentary cutting out as horrified spectators run away behind a wired fence.

A witness said: “One man was shot and then when on the floor chopped up with a sword.”

The area was swarmed by armed police with one officer saying the entire force for the area was at the scene.

Derbyshire Police said in a statement: “We were called to a large scale disturbance in Elvaston Lane, Alvaston at 15.51 on Sunday 20 August. Three people have been injured, one seriously.

“They have all been taken to hospital. There is a large police presence in the area and officers are expected to remain at the scene for some time.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information, is asked to contact us quoting the reference 739 of 20 August.”

Some witnesses claim that two gangs were responsible for the violence.
