The news comes after the couple visited Florida on Saturday to see the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia. It is the second time the 72-year-old FLOTUS has tested positive for Covid.

In August last year the president’s wife tested positive for Covid. It came not long after Biden himself recovered from the same virus.

Both Bidens are cosidered to be in a high-risk group for Covid due to their age. They have however both been vaccinated against the illness.

Elizabeth Alexander, Mrs Biden’s communications director, said: “This evening, the First Lady tested positive for Covid-19. She is currently experiencing only mild symptoms. She will remain at their home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.”

While Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, said: “Following the First Lady’s positive test for Covid-19, President Biden was administered a Covid test this evening. The President tested negative. The President will test at a regular cadence this week and monitor for symptoms.”

Covid cases have seen an increase across the US in recent weeks. Hospitalisations increased by 19% to 15,067 by August 19. The Centers for Disease Control and Protection also revealed deaths were up 18%.
