Urgent warning after inmate escapes prison van and jumps on London Tube train

A man who escaped from a prison van parked outside a police station should not be approached by members of the public, the Metropolitan Police has said. Kwami Richards, 42, made his escape outside Brixton Police Station, south London, at about 2pm on Friday.

Richards was wanted on recall to prison for beaching licence conditions after serving a burglary sentence, according to the Metropolitan Police.

He had been arrested by Met officers and was being taken to a prison by a private security company when he got away.

A police officer who saw what happened chased Richards into Brixton Underground Station.

But the cop was assaulted by Richards as he tried to stop him.

They added: “The 42-year-old, who has links to Wandsworth, was wanted on recall to prison for beaching his licence conditions after serving a sentence for burglary.

“He had been arrested by Met officers and was in the process of being transported to prison by a private security company when the incident occurred.

“He was pursued by a police officer who witnessed the incident into Brixton Underground Station. The officer was assaulted as he attempted to detain Richards who then boarded a Victoria Line train.

“Richards should not be approached, and the public are asked to call 999 immediately if he is seen.”

Anyone with information about Richards’ whereabouts should call 101 or tweet @MetCC quoting CAD 4140/26May.
