Unheard Diana tapes reveal King Charles was 'disappointed' when Prince Harry was born

Princess Diana claimed King Charles was “disappointed” when Prince Harry was born because he “wanted a girl” new tapes of the late Princess of Wales speaking have revealed.

The audio of Diana was recorded by her biographer Andrew Morton in the 1990s. He went on to publish the bestseller Diana: Her True Story.

The clips are set to air in an upcoming documentary about Princess Diana and were released just a day after the 26th anniversary of her death.

Diana claims in the recording that the then-Prince Charles told her stepmother Raine Spencer at Harry’s christening in 1984: “We’re so disappointed, we wanted a girl.”

Countess Spencer hit back at Charles and “snapped his head off”, according to the Princess who said her stepmother told him he should “realise you are lucky to have a child”.

The release comes just a week before the first anniversary of the death of Harry’s grandmother and Charles’s mother Queen Elizabeth II.

The upcoming production is a follow-up to the 2017 documentary Diana: In Her Own Words.

The producer of both documentaries, Tom Jennings, spoke to ABC about the type of storytelling that he called the “closest thing to the truth”.

“When the first film came out, people were blown away because they had not heard Diana talk like this before,” he said.

Jennings continued: “It’s a style of storytelling that is very difficult to do but I think it is the closest thing to the truth that you can get because nothing gets in your way. It is important as part of Diana’s legacy to allow more of those tapes to be heard.”

Diana recorded around seven hours of audio recordings when she was married to King Charles but not all of the tapes were released as part of the 2017 documentary.

More is expected to be heard in the upcoming 2024 production. In the tapes that were released, Diana says: “At Harry’s christening Charles went up to mummy and said: ‘We’re so disappointed, we wanted a girl’ and mummy snapped his head off and said you should realise you are lucky to have a child that’s normal.”

She continued: “Ever since that day, the shutters have come down. That’s what he does when he gets somebody answering back at him.”

In another audio clip, the Princess describes how she hated her stepmother and how she and her sisters called their stepmother “Acid Raine”.

I was so angry. I told her, ‘I hate you so much. If only you knew how much we all hated you for what you’ve done. You’ve ruined the house, you’ve spent Daddy’s money’,” she said.

Diana added: “I said everything I possibly could and Raine said, ‘you have no idea how much pain mother put your father through’.”

In 1992, when Andrew Morton released his book which detailed the trouble in Charles and Diana’s marriage, many called the work sensationalist. Critics were unaware that Diana was Morton’s main source.

Diana had opened up about her intense unhappiness within the Firm and even her attempts to take her own life.

Morton capitalized on the success of his book to release the 1997 bestseller Diana: Her True Story In Her Own Words just months after her death.
