Ukraine war LIVE: Wagner troops 'turn down Putin' as he desperately hunts for fighters

Vladimir Putin is not finding success in recruiting for Wagner members for the Russia military with hundreds reportedly turning down contracts. The Russian leader is scrambling to replace frontline losses in Ukraine while avoiding a deeply unpopular mobilisation ahead of the Russian presidential election, according to a military analyst.

Sean Bell told Sky News: “They desperately need to mobilise more people out of the general population.

“One of the reasons they won’t do that is because Putin faces a presidential general election in spring next year, and it would be deeply unpopular with Russian society.

“If you have to mobilise more people, you have to explain what has happened to the guys you have already mobilised.”
