Russian Navy ships and submarines have been leaving their base at Novorossiysk and entering the Black Sea, according to Ukrainian reports. The reason for this sudden deployment is currently unclear, but an independent naval researcher H.I. Sutton believes the move may be in preparation for an offensive operation or to drill for a Ukrainian attack. Despite the dominance on paper, the Russian Navy has been on its back foot after several successful attacks from the smaller Ukrainian forces. Last October’s attack on Sevastopol, in which uncrewed surface ships were used, caused significant damage to the Russian Navy, and it is possible that this deployment is a response to these attacks. H.I Sutton reports via Naval News: “The group included the Project 11711 Ivan Gren class landing ship, Pyotr Morgunov, the largest amphibious ship in the Black Sea. It also contained all three Project 636.3 Improved-Kilo class submarines which were present at the base.” This sudden deployment of Russian Navy ships and submarines in the Black Sea has sparked concern among neighboring countries and the international community.
