Ukraine has 14 months to win war with Russia as weapons shipments hang in balance

Donald Trump is now a massive 10 points ahead of Joe Biden in a recent poll – and if he becomes President again in 2024, it may spell difficult times for Ukraine, a broadcaster says.

BBC journalist John Simpson made the remarks in a post on Twitter, suggesting other NATO leaders “will have to immediately step into the leadership gap that will open up” should Biden depart.

This may pressure Ukraine to win in the war against Russia quickly – as backing from Washington may dwindle.

Ukraine has received plenty of support from the US in military aid packages throughout the Biden administration, including the announcement of a $325 million weapons deal on Thursday.

This is the 47th batch of equipment to be pulled from Pentagon inventories to aid Ukraine since August 2021.

But if Trump wins another term, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky may not see as much support from the US.

The new poll from the Washington Post shows Biden’s approval rating at about 37 percent, with his disapproval figure at 56 percent. Meanwhile, Trump’s standing in polls remains steady, despite him facing 91 felony counts across four indictments.

Trump has previously said that America should not be “sending very much” to Ukraine.

Other Republican candidates have also heightened Ukraine’s fears that the next US president could limit spending. Zelensky may feel pressure to win the war quickly before the next US election.

Trump has publicly condemned Biden’s decision to send cluster munitions as part of US aid packages to Ukraine, warning it could lead to World War 3.

Trump wrote in a statement in July: “Joe Biden should not be dragging us further toward World War 3 by sending cluster munitions to Ukraine – he should be trying to END the war and stop the horrific death and destruction being caused by an incompetent administration.”

Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Trump has repeatedly refused to promise support for Ukraine publicly.

At a CNN town hall in May, the former president deflected questions of whether he would supply weapons and equipment to Ukraine as president.

Trump has also claimed that the war would never have happened under his watch, and that he could broker a deal between the two nations in 24 hours.
