UK weather maps turn red and purple as 500-mile snowstorm thumps Britain


Weather maps are turning red and purple with a 500-mile snowstorm moving towards Britain.

WXCharts has forecast a huge snow bomb to hit the UK late next week (April 5), bringing with it extremely low temperatures and rain.

According to the maps, snow will be heaviest in central Scotland (Inverness) with depths of up to 11cm. North Scotland (Wick) will see up to 7cm of snow and south Scotland (Edinburgh, Dumfries) will see 3cm.

The north of England (Newcastle, Carlisle, Middlesbrough) and Wales (Cardiff, Conwy) will both see up to 1cm.

Rain will follow behind the snow, sweeping upwards from the southwest coast over Plymouth, Southampton, London, Norwich, Cardiff, Birmingham and Manchester.

It will be coldest in central Scotland (Aberdeen, Inverness, Fort William), with temperatures as low as -11C. It will be around -6C in the north of Scotland (Wick) and -4C in the south (Edinburgh, Dumfries).

The north of England (Newcastle, Carlisle)and Northern Ireland (Belfast, Derry) will be as low as -2C. Wales will be around 0C.

The midlands (Manchester, Hull, Birmingham) will hit around 1C and the south of England (Plymouth, Southampton, Canterbury) will be 4C.

This Evening and Tonight:

Mostly dry across central and southeastern England. Otherwise rather cloudy with rain or showers, with the rain heavy initially across the southwest of the UK. Rain also turning to snow at times across the higher ground in Scotland.

Tuesday:

Largely cloudy on Tuesday with outbreaks of rain for many, turning wintry across Scotland. A few brighter spells possible in the south at times. Feeling rather cold in the north.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Breezy in the coming days with sunny spells and heavy showers. A more persistent spell of rain is likely to move north through the early hours of Thursday. Feeling chilly.
