UK traffic chaos live: Storm Gerrit sparks travel meltdown as snow and rain halts Britain

Storm Gerrit has sparked a travel meltdown after heavy snow and rain battered Britain.

Roads have been flooded, tornados have swept through residential areas and hundreds of homes have been left without power after the weather system made its way over the UK.

Over the next few days, thousands of people are expected to take to the roads and railways of the UK ahead of the New Year.

Parts of Scotland were hit by winds of up to 80mph. SSEN said around 25,000 homes lost power because of the storm with around 16,000 expected to still be without electricity today. Major roads were also hit by severe flooding when the A9 was temporarily closed due to flooding.

Across the UK, train operators reported severe delays with train operators LNER, Avanti West Coast, and East Midlands Railway reporting delays due to the weather.

As well as power cuts and severe winds, some homes have also been hit by tornados. Around 100 homes were hit by a tornado in Stalybridge, Tameside.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police confirmed the damage was caused by a “localised tornado” but that no one had been injured.

They added: “GMP declared this as a major incident due to the severity of the damage caused and potential risk to public safety.”
