Across Britain, it has been a clear and bright start to the weekend with plenty of sunshine, but this is set to change dramatically with the arrival of heavy rainfall and storms on Sunday.
Saturday’s dry conditions will only be temporary for Britons as a yellow weather warning is now in place for tomorrow for Scotland throughout the day, with heavy rains affecting northern England too.
Met Office meteorologist, Aidan McGivern said: “Outbreaks of rain are moving through West Wales into northern England, southern Scotland, and it’s into the afternoon where that rain turns heavy and persistent across Northern Ireland, central and southern Scotland and parts of northern England, central and southern Scotland.”
Weather maps show the force of the gales, with some strong Atlantic winds up to 60mph developing with winds expected to hit Scotland and northern England. The maps show strong winds picking up pace from Saturday evening across the Atlantic.
The Met Office has warned from 4am on Sunday morning through to midnight, “persistent and heavy rain” can be expected throughout the day, and could cause flooding.
Outbreaks of rain will move from west Wales into northern England and central and southern Scotland and will turn heavy and persistent. It is important to stay safe in harsh weather conditions and during risks of flooding.
The weather experts advise being very careful on the roads if you have to drive in such conditions. It is vital to “avoid flooded roads” and give yourself more time to react when approaching hazards.
Some parts of the UK will continue to see brighter skies, and the midlands, East Anglia, and the southeast will feel warmer because of the southerly airflow from Europe.
Temperatures fell to single figures under the clear skies last night, where 0.6C was recorded in Tyndrum in Scotland, and 3.6C in Exeter airport.
Saturday morning saw a chilly start to the day with sunny skies and even a touch of frost in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.
On Sunday, temperatures in the south of the UK that will avoid the wet weather will remain warm, and London will reach highs of 20C in the afternoon.
