The UK is set to face cold weather in the coming days as temperatures plunge below zero, according to the Met Office. The cold air currently in Scotland will start to move to the south of the UK on Sunday, leading to colder temperatures and wintry showers later tonight and into the early part of next week. This will lead to a cold and frosty start for many people on Monday, with temperatures overnight potentially plunging below zero.
But according to the latest BBC weather forecast, this will later clear with some areas seeing sunny spells.
A cold weather front is expected to move in from over the Atlantic on Tuesday bringing lower temperatures, heavy rain and potentially snow in the hills of northern Scotland.
The heavy rain is likely to continue in many areas on Wednesday, however, temperatures will start to feel milder.
The milder temperatures will continue into Thursday with some sunny spells, but there is still the potential for heavy rain.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “We’ve got some colder weather briefly moving in from the north across the UK over the next day or two, giving some wintry showers and icy patches in the north, with widespread frost.
“The weather then turns much milder, but unsettled from the southwest from Tuesday, with some heavy rain and possibly gales developing in places later this week.
“Heading into April the trend is for the weather to become less unsettled, especially in the north. Temperatures near average overall.”
On Friday, the downpours will continue in most of the UK, but Scotland may well avoid some of the worst of the heavy rain.

Meanwhile, long-range weather maps appeared to show snow hitting the UK in mid-April.
The maps showed snow hitting the Midlands, as well as parts of London and Wales and Scotland.
Snow is expected on April 11, but this could change as the weeks go on.
