UK snow latest as 360-mile Arctic blast just hours away from battering Britain

The UK will be battered by a 360-mile Arctic blast in hours according to the latest weather maps. Met Office forecasters are predicting temperatures to drop as low as -15C this week in the coldest parts of the country, with those making predictions at WXCharts predicting heavy snowfall from the north of England to central Scotland.

According to the WXCharts maps, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Carlisle will all be hit by about 2cm of snow per hour over the next few days along with parts of Northern Ireland.

The Met Office says the north of the UK will see lows of -10C today getting even colder tomorrow as temperatures reach -15C in some parts.

In the south things will be a little warmer but not by much, with lows of -8C predicted for most of the week. It comes as the forecaster has put yellow weather alerts for snow and ice in place from Monday until Thursday.

The Met Office’s daily weather update read: “Plenty of winter sunshine on offer today with scattered snow showers around windward coasts, these mostly falling as snow across Northern Ireland and Scotland.

“Feeling cold with brisk winds in the north and along eastern coasts bringing significant wind chill.

“Temperatures dropping quickly after sunset, leading to a widespread and in places a severe frost. Mostly dry with clear skies for many, but snow showers continue in the north.

“Tomorrow will be cold and frosty for all with showers continuing near windward coasts. An area of more significant rain, sleet and snow affecting northern areas during the day. Elsewhere dry and sunny.”

Warnings are in place in Norfolk, the North West, Midlands, Northern Ireland and the north of Scotland.

The forecaster says temperatures will remain cold until the weekend when things will warm up.

The Met Office’s long-range forecast read: “Still cold on Friday with northwesterly winds bringing further snow showers inland at times, although these should ease later in the day and turn to rain in western areas.

“Many inland areas will be mainly dry with a good deal of clear/sunny weather.

“Over the weekend, a transition to less cold conditions is likely as Atlantic systems start to arrive from the west, eventually bringing spells of rain and strong winds across all areas. Whilst conditions should gradually turn milder, this transition brings the chance of some snow.”
